Patrick Coughlin, owner of Coughlin Jewelers in St. Clair, Michigan has seen a growing trend over the last decade of couples who are committed to each other but do not go down the traditional road of getting married. Today, many couples move in together, have children, and continue to live and love happily without marriage as a number one concern.

“This is not just a local trend; it is happening all over the world. And it’s just not the younger kids, middle-aged and older couples are also living together without the formality of wedding vows” Coughlin said.

Coughlin decided to create a set of rings that couples who are not married can wear to show they too are in a loving, faithful relationship. He designed two (2) interlocking bands that easily roll up and down the finger. The idea is each band represents one person in the relationship and are interlocked forever just as their commitment is.

“Although a simple design, it took many months of testing and altering the widths and curvature to get them to roll easily. I wore prototypes every day, making adjustments and wearing them on my wedding finger. Then one day while I was driving and looking at the rings while gripping the steering wheel, I realized that this was the most comfortable wedding band I had ever worn”.

It took a total of two years of research, development, and legal hurdles to be able to bring the concept to the market. “The patents and trademark protection actually took the longest time to secure. The biggest issue jewelry designers face is being “knocked off” by others. We decided to be sure we had adequate protection prior to launch”.

The set of bands is called 4ever2 and features a hidden Jewelstone. There are no visible diamonds and or gemstones, which helps keep the cost down. These bands are extremely durable even for the most active wearer. One of their slogans is “Wedding Bands for Working Hands.” The hidden Jewelstone set in one of the bands and is comprised mostly of Rose Quartz, the gemstone known for love for centuries prior to diamonds becoming popular.
